Fall Fishing Action
Report Date: October 7, 2008
Well it look's like Fall is slowly making it's appearance. We have seen huge schools of mullet, some spanish mackerel and more sailfish. Now we just need cooler weather.
We have not been fishing as much over the past couple weeks. October is always slow for charters, but can be great for fishing.
We fished with Steve and Darren on Thursday the 25th. The offshore fishing was slow, with just several barracudas over about 4 hours. In an effort to save the day, I suggested we try the inlet on the last of the falling tide. It was a good call as our live herring and finger mullet were devoured by 2 big jack crevalles, a big gray snapper, a nice mutton snapper, 2 out of 6 tarpon and 3 snook. The top two snook were 20 and 25 pounds.
The 27th we tried the daytime swordfish action with no strikes. We did catch 8 nice dolphin on the way out to the swordfish grounds along with a couple small tuna.
The 28th we fished with the always deadly Don and Sandy Blake. It was a true Advil day. Fishing light tackle and jigs they caught over 30 ladyfish to 5 pounds, a spanish mackerel and 30 bluefish. When catching bluefish got boring we headed offshore where we trolled small lures. This plan found 6 dolphin and 7 tuna in about 1000 feet of water. We tried a wreck for jacks with no action, so we returned to the inlet where we caught a snook and 1 of 3 tarpon. It was sore arms for both anglers that day.
Fred, Tom and Robert joined us on October 2nd. We trolled up a dozen small tuna and 1 dolphin in 700 feet of water and then put up the kite in 200 feet of water. The action was good with 4 nice dolphin added to the box. We also caught a sailfish and 3 king mackerel. We tried the inlet on the way home, but the action was slow.
We fished the inlet that evening with the Pemberton family. It was the slowest trip in our 9 years of fishing together with only 1 jack crevalle for the evening.
The 5th we fished with Ed Walker and Erwin and Martha Cole. They had a great day of kite fishing with live herring in 150 to 250 feet of water. They tagged and released 4 sailfish, released 3 barracuda and a nice amberjack. For their annual Florida fish fry they added a dolphin, 2 mutton snappers, 2 big red grouper and 4 kings to the fish box. They said the fish fry was super at Monty’s South Beach.
Bob and CJ joined us last night for some late day fishing. Offshore CJ caught a barracuda, a shark and a dolphin on live herring fished under the kite. At the inlet we caught a 34 inch snook before calling it a night.
As you can see the fall fishing has started and the sails are picking up and the trips are less frequent. This would be a good time to get out there and enjoy less boats on the water and more fish on your lines. Email me at email@example.com to plan a trip.
We will be holding a seminar on November 20th at Dusky Sport Center from 6 to 8:30. The topic is getting and using live bait. Give Dusky a call at 954-922-8890.
