Our Late Summer Fun

Report Date: September 12, 2016

Our fishing lately has been a mix of highs and lows.

A month ago we caught a 400 lb. swordfish. It ate a rigged squid on the bottom in 1800 feet of water. Two weeks ago we were fishing the Jim Allen Memorial swordfish tournament. After a few hours with no bites, I went to the same 1800 foot spot. We dropped a rigged squid and caught a 166 lb. swordfish. This swordfish gave Zac Atkinson and my crew first place in the tournament.

We had a great Bimini trip with the Dusky owners fleet. We had fun days of snapper, kingfish, amberjacks and cero mackerel on the reef. We took Baron and his family to the back country shallow wrecks in search of Baron's bucket list cobia. We got it! Baron caught a 31 pound cobia and the family caught lots of snappers. My sister, Sue, and my co-captain Abie's wife, Yudith, each caught their first hog fish and bonefish.

This time of year business is slow. With no mahi this year, business is even slower. We have put together mixed bags of bonito, 8 to 10 pound tuna, amberjacks, mutton snapper and red snapper. A few sailfish have help make fishing fun.

Yesterday was another high. We fished a half day with Melissa and her dad Mark. The day was going as many of late, with a few bonito and a couple barracuda. Then a treat came our way. We found a very deep wreck last week. We dropped a live herring and Melissa came up with a beautiful 14 pound snowy grouper. A couple amberjack finished our morning.

In the afternoon we fished with my sister and my nephew, visiting from Atlanta. Keith had complained the night before that my sister caught a bonefish last month, and he had had a bonefish on his bucket list for 35 years.

Family bonefish

I set out to try for a bonefish for Keith. We anchored in a good looking spot and set out 3 rods baited with frozen shrimp. 5 minutes later Keith was hooked up with a screaming drags as something headed north with his hook. A few minutes later and an 8 pound bonefish was in the net. Another fish off Keith's bucket list. No more bonefish came our way, so we switched to my sister, Sue's favorite, sea trout. She caught 4 trout, a jack and a lizard fish before heading home with everybody happy.

The fall bait migration has started. Look for greatly improved fishing for swordfish, snappers, grouper, mackerel and November sailfish.
